The client, a first-time homebuyer, came to us looking to gut-renovate her 1980’s ranch home and transform the lower basement level into a unit for her grandmother. Basements, which are often undesirable for living and sleeping, was designed to feel like a serene studio within steps of the backyard. In dealing with low ceiling heights, the structure was underpinned to extend the foundation to a lower elevation. Bringing your eye-level to the grade was achieved by carefully placing wide windows lining the perimeter, also facing lush flowers for privacy.

Upstairs, the client’s vision for the gut renovation engaged contrasting materials in each space, natural vs machined materials. Materials include stainless steel cabinetry with a wood veneer ceiling, to wood clad entryway & sunroom with concrete floors, and earthy pigmented micro-cement bathrooms with chrome fixtures. The floorplanning was re-worked to address a more functional flow, incorporate an uninsulated sunroom into the home, and design a transitional space upon entering the home.
